Originally from Katanning, Ashton played 39 games for the Eagles and kicked 41 goals between 2010 and 2013.

Ashton also played 205 games for South Fremantle, which ranks him in the top 15 for games played by a Bulldog. Ashton was a two-time premiership player for the Bulldogs in 2005 and 2009, was a recipient of the Simpson Medal in 2009 and finished second in the 2015 Sandover Medal.
